Watch: Netflix’s Carry On has serious Die Hard vibes

Cancel your weekend plans, a new thriller that has all the hallmarks of a Die Hard reboot is shaping up to be a must watch this Christmas.

Carry On sees young TSA agent Ethan’s world turned completely upside down when he gets sucked into a terror plot at a major US airport on Christmas Eve (naturally).

Ethan, played by Tarron Egerton, sees the low-level security officer blackmailed into letting a bag slip through unchecked.

***spoilers ahead***

The trailer for Carry On shows Ethan find a mysterious earpiece with instructions to put it in his ear while scanning luggage. He obliges only to be told that his pregnant girlfriend, who also works at the airport, is in danger if he doesn’t let the bag go through security.

‘Ethan today is a day you are going to remember for a very long time but if you handle it right you’re going to have a chance to forget,’ a voice is heard saying.

‘You’re a low level TSO, you’re going nowhere, I’m telling you how this goes, one bag for one life,’ the chilling voice continues.

Ethan resists before being told to cancel the security text ‘or we execute your girlfriend’ and so begins a cat and mouse style chase that sees Ethan grapple with his conscience and wanting to keep his girlfriend unharmed.

He identifies his blackmailer (played by Jason Bateman) but a subsequent attempt to call 911 ends in tragedy.

It seems like Ethan has no choice but to take matters into his own hands.

‘We all wanted this to feel incredibly realistic, like the events of this movie could happen to any of us on any given day at any airport, and Jason and Taron delivered brilliant performances that helped ground our movie and make it fell real,’ director Jaume Collet-Serra said.

Carry On is available on Netflix from 13 December.
