Rachel Gorry on how her daughters have navigated grief
As her daughters face their fourth Christmas without their beloved dad Daniel, Rachel Gorry has revealed what has helped them to cope over the past few turbulent years.
She and Daniel share three beautiful girls, Leah, Holly and Hannah who were just nine, five and three when Daniel lost his battle with cancer in 2020.
Since that awful time, Rachel says her girls have now thankfully ‘come on’ so much in coping with their grief and credits two things for helping to make things that little bit easier.
The first is play therapy, a form of counselling using play to help children come to terms with difficult experiences in a safe environment.
Rachel first got her girls into play therapy before Daniel passed and has kept up the practice.
I really feel like to helped them to get their little heads around Daddy’s passing,’ she told RSVP magazine.
Rachel acknowledged that each of her girls is grieving in a different way and that play therapy has given her the tools to help each child cope with their loss.
Another thing that has helped is sharing their memories of Daniel.
Rachel explained: ‘They love telling stories about their Daniel all their Daddy. I was always so open and honest with the girls. We talk so openly about Daniel in good times and when we’re missing him and when we’re feeling sad as well.’
It’s both of these things that she says that has helped them ‘come on so much.’ Her words come after she revealed that Daniel was very clear about wanting her to move on with her life after his passing.
