Cork’s only dedicated LGBT+ club to shut

Cork’s only dedicated LGBT+ club “will no longer be running at 64/65 Oliver Plunkett Street” with immediate effect.

Vibe opened in January on Oliver Plunkett St, four months after the controversial move by Chambers bar to remove all of its LGBT+ flags and décor in a temporary rebranding.

In a statement on social media on Monday evening, Jen Bailey of Vibe wrote: “I’m absolutely heartbroken to be writing this post, and it’s the last thing I wanted to do but after 9 months of building a safe space with the community, for the community, Vibe will no longer be running at 64/65 Oliver Plunkett Street with immediate effect.”

She paid tribute to “all the amazing performers, team and of course the support of all our outstanding customers”.

She said she had “put my heart and soul into building a safe fun space for our amazing community members” and said she was “sorry to let everyone down or that has bookings etc”.

She added: “I just want to say thanks so much to each and every one of you for helping me build up Vibe to what it was until today.”

When it opened, it promised to be a safe place for the LGBT+ community and was billed as the only permanent nightclub specifically for the community in Munster.

Following the September 2023 move to rebrand Chambers, hundreds of people protested on Washington St about the decision.
