The last time they had to make a big call and fill the boots of a manager who led the Irish team to a World Cup, the FAI played it safe, kept it in-house, took the easy option… and were not rewarded.
Now, as the increasingly busy Marc Canham sees his in-tray pile up and plots to hire a senior international team manager for the third time in just 16 months following the exit this week of Eileen Gleeson as senior team manager, the FAI face scrutiny – again – of their ability to conduct a recruitment process.
