In a publish on X, the Central Board of Oblique Taxes and Customs (CBIC) mentioned the GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister and comprising state counterparts, has not but deliberated on any GST price adjustments and the group of ministers (GoM) is simply a “recommendatory” physique.

The clarification from CBIC got here a day after stories that the GoM on GST price rationalisation has recommended tax price on sin items like aerated drinks, cigarettes, tobacco and associated merchandise be hiked to 35 per cent, from the present 28 per cent.
“The GST Council has not but deliberated on any GST price adjustments. The Council has not even obtained the suggestions of the GoM. In actual fact the GoM has but to finalise and current its suggestions to the Council after which the Council will take a ultimate view on the suggestions of the GoM,” the CBIC mentioned.
It mentioned the GST Council is empowered to suggest GST charges together with adjustments to them.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a publish on X mentioned Finance Ministers from numerous states within the GoM are working to handle GST price adjustments.
“Thereafter, the GST Council, consisting of all state FMs will take up their suggestions, after they subsequent meet,” Sitharaman mentioned.
The GST Council had constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the GST price rationalisation other than sure different points referred by the GST Council.
The GoM contains ministers from the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala, with the deputy chief minister of Bihar because the Convenor.
